The Transvideo Rainbow HD comes very close to the ideal on-camera monitor. I bough the “Alexa package” that comes with accessories like the practical holder, Noga arm, cables, etc. The monitor delivers what a professional expects: quality, simplicity, and perfect user interface without gimmicks.
The monitor is very well made. Solid, slim design, no holes or openings where dust/humidity can get in. The mounting attachment in the back is a good solution so the monitor can be put into almost any position. The buttons are well placed – quick access to the few function that are really needed on-set. The monitor basically has 4 viewing modes: “normal”, “DIT view”, “image and waveform” and “focus puller” with clean image without overlays or additional info. The peaking and separate focus tool are very well adjustable, which is very important. The “zoom-in” function works great (and yes there’s an indicator that shows you that you’re looking at a “zoomed-in” view!).
The image quality is good and various basic LUTs can be applied.
The Rainbow HD is a quality product that doesn’t come cheap, though. The high brightness-versions are priced incredibly high – the standard version has been working well for me with the sunhood.
One thing I do miss is a second SDI input (SDI B) which should be standard at this price. In future firmware upgrade I hope a “false color” view is implemented, as well as a higher-resolution waveform/or even RGB waveform.
This monitor doesn’t impress with specs, low price or sexy marketing, but it’s purposefully designed for the professional.
